Your One Stop Guide to Collecting Autographs
Autograph collecting is a bit complex to start out, but is pretty easy once you get used to sending out requests. First off, you need to research the celebrity to:
1. Find their address
2. Determine if they send pictures or if you should send them one
3. Determine if they reply back to fan mail at all
I use the website www.fanmail.biz. It has been a very helpful tool throughout the process.
Some celebrities send pictures; some celebrities just sign pictures they are sent. Search for the celebrity on fanmail and check out the feedback other people have received.
You will need to do the following to send to celebrities. Write them an LOR (letter of request). In this letter, you should either ask for an autographed picture or ask them to sign a picture you have enclosed. You should also write why you are a fan and what you like about them.
You also need to enclose a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope). Celebrities are much more likely to reply back if you make their job easier.
When you are compiling a request you will include-
1. Letter Of Request
2. Self Addressed Stamped Envelope
3. Picture (or whatever you want them to sign)
4. Cardboard (to keep the photo from bending).
Place all of these inside the larger envelope addressed to the celebrity. Then, bring that to your local post office so they can put the proper postage on it.
*As far as envelope sizes go, this really depends on the size of the picture you are sending to be autographed.
-For an 8 x 10 picture, I send an 8 1/2 x 11 SASE and put everything inside a 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 envelope.
-For a 5 x 7 picture, I send a 6 x 9 SASE and put everything inside an 8 1/2 x 11 envelope.
Like I said, the hobby is a bit complicated and seemingly overwhelming when you first start. However, once you go through the process a few times you'll get the hang of it. Autograph collecting requires a lot of patience and work, but the payoffs are awesome!
